I went evangelism calling Thursday night, like most Thursday nights. First call – they didn’t want to talk or let us into the house. Second call – nobody home. Walking back to the car with Phyllis Weaver and Kreig Lopour I said, “The third call is usually the charm.” How prophetic!
The third call was to be upon a married woman. She wasn’t home, but her husband was. After chit-chatting at the door, I asked him if he would give us five minutes to explain the good news of Jesus Christ. Sure! We prayed for open doors, and there it was.
The husband explained that he felt unworthy of heaven after all the sin he had committed. We explained that Christ did not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance (Luke 5:32). “While we were yet helpless, Christ died for the ungodly” (Romans 5:6). To make a long story short, this man decided to believe in Christ and repent of his sins. We led him in a prayer of commitment, as the Bible says, “Whoever will call upon the name of the Lord will be saved” (Acts 2:21). Afterward, we told him that angels have a party in heaven over one sinner who repents (Luke 15:10).
Walking back to the car, it didn’t matter that the Dodgers lost, or the Angels won. What mattered was that the devil lost one soul and Jesus Christ won one soul. The wife would return home to a new man, with Christ living inside him. We anticipate his baptism and hers very soon. One-Verse Evangelism training begins this coming Thursday, October 29th. I hope a lot more of you can come out to Thursday nights where the real action is. |
