EXORCISMS PDF  | Print |  E-mail

This week I had an appointment with a man that turned into an exorcism.

When you read the Gospels and Acts, casting out demons is commonplace.  Yet, in America exorcisms are relegated to science fiction movies.  Maybe being demon possessed or oppressed is a lot more mainstream than we realize.

The man in question had a sordid past with drugs and witchcraft.  Upon questioning him and his wife, he had 27 of 28 Biblical indications of being “demonized” (i.e. hearing voices, supernatural strength, violent, foaming at the mouth, suicidal, etc.).

We asked the man to repeat a sinners prayer, to renounce aloud all past sins (see Acts 19:18; 2 Corinthians 4:2), and to allow us to attempt to cast out any demonic entities from his soul.  As Jesus asked the demons to identify themselves by name (Mark 5:9), we did the same. I won’t tell you the names of the demons, but the man uttered four different names of four separate and distinct evil spirits.

There was a ten minute battle between the power of Jesus Christ and the powers of the enemy over this man’s soul.  In the end, all demons were cast out by Christ’s overwhelming power.  Greater is He that is in us, than he that is in the world.  (1 John 4:4).  The demons put up a fight with growls, guttural voices, seizing the man, etc.  Jesus Christ came to set the captives free.

My kids asked me if I was scared at all.  I told them no, for God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, love and a sound mind. (2 Timothy 1:7).  If we fear God, we have nothing to fear.  My fifteen year old asked me how much I charge for an exorcism.  Nothing!  Jesus said, “Cast out demons, freely you received, freely give.”  (Matthew 10:8b).
